TO accelerate the roll-out of electricity supply as well as cater for growth and new connections, eThekwini Municipality’s Executive Committee has approved funding to the tune of more than R31 million for electricity infrastructure in various areas across the City.

The project will include construction and commissioning of distributor sub-stations, reinforcement of the existing medium voltage reticulation system, installation of new brick sub-stations, replacement of switchgear and installation of medium voltage cables, and many more.

Areas that will benefit from this massive project include Mayville, Verulam, uThongathi, Kennedy Road Transit Camp, Clare Hills, Reservoir Hills, Westville South, Kloof and other areas within the Durban Central Business District.

Currently, eThekwini Municipality provides electricity services to more than 700 000 customers within the city and surrounding areas.

Councillor Nigel Gumede, Chairperson of the Human Settlement and Infrastructure Committee, said this infrastructure upgrade is critical as it acts as a response to the City’s Integrated Development Plan to cater for future developments.
