THE USAID SA will host a Fun Walk in the fight against Tuberculosis through the city of Durban this Friday, 15 July.
The event is scheduled to start at 7am; from Botha’s Park to Gugu Dlamini Park Extention, and will be hosted by television and radio personality, Claire Mawisa.
South Africa has the third highest burden of tuberculosis (TB) in the world (after India and China), with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting an estimated incidence of 450,000 cases of active TB in 2013. So about 1% of the population develop active TB disease each year. Discouragingly, the incidence of TB in the country has increased by 400% over the past 15 years. Of the 450,000 incident cases in South Africa, the WHO estimates that about 270,000 (60%) of these people have both HIV and TB infection.
In recognition of the need for greater attention to the global TB epidemic, the International AIDS Society (IAS) is organising TB2016, a two-day conference dedicated exclusively to this infectious disease immediately preceding AIDS 2016 (18 to 22 July 2016) in Durban, South Africa. This meeting, which takes place on 16 and 17 July 2016, incorporates the biannual SA TB Conference. The conferences will attract international audiences to the city.
