Sea Sunday service for Durban

The annual Sea Sunday service will promote the awareness of society of the challenges faced by seafarers.

THE Annual Sea Sunday Service takes place at N Shed, Port of Durban, on Sunday, 24 July at 11am.

This interdenominational service day has been commemorated internationally on the second Sunday in July since 1946, however churches may celebrate the day on any Sunday in July, and aims at promoting the awareness of society of the challenges faced by seafarers.

The day pays tribute not only to those “who go down to the sea in ships” but includes those who work in the ports, be they on vessels or on shore, as well as those devoted men and women who do duty in rescue and recreational organisations in the maritime community.

The maritime profession, whether it entails working on vessels as they cross the oceans, or working in ports, at sea or on shore must be one of the most demanding and often dangerous professions, particularly bearing in mind the current tragedy of piracy attacks. This commemoration is therefore very apt.

The service will be organised by the Durban Port Chaplains. Organisations represented will be the Sailors’ Society, Mission to Seamen, Apostleship of the Sea, Biblia, the German, Korean and Chinese Missions as well as the Christelike Seemansorganisasie.

The SA Army Band will participate, providing musical accompaniment. After the service tea will be served.

All are welcome. For more information, contact Linda at the Sailors’ Society office on 031 266 0695 or Yvonne on 083 282 4810.
