Street art for Mandela Day at City View

City View showed their care with colour this Mandela Day by supporting an organisation which is giving street children a future while also celebrating and giving exposure to local talent.

WITH Mandela Day activities still in swing this week City View invited the public to check out and add their artistic touch to their ‘Murals for Mandela’ street art expo running until Sunday.

This Mandela Day, City View teamed up with Durban-based non-profit organisation, ICare, that rehabilitates and educates street children. Their Pop-Up Street Art Expo will take place during the week from 18 to 24 July, will not only expose shoppers to a variety of street art and emerging artistic talent, but also raise funds for I Care in the spirit of Mandela Day.

The event is a street art celebration, charity fundraiser and community activation. The Expo took place on Monday 18 July and featured four local street artists. These multi-talented artists draw their inspiration from the challenges faced in township and rural life, and showcased a variety of art forms from street art and painting to traditional bead work and clay pot making.

The children from I Care were also present on the day, creating artworks, which they will be selling to the public in order to raise money for the organisation. Debonairs showed their support for the campaign by donating pizza to the boys that took part in the art classes on the day.

A Mandela Day mural, designed by legendary street artist Shaun Oakley, gave shoppers the chance to get creative by spending their 67 minutes making an artistic contribution to the mural. This mural will be open all week till Sunday, 24 July where shoppers will be able to visit the mural and paint a part of the design.

By painting the mural, shoppers will also stand the chance to win great prizes. All they have to do is take a selfie with a friend at the mural and post it on the City View Facebook page. After the mural has been completed, one lucky shopper will be selected at random and will win shopping vouchers worth R250.
