Howell Road residents fear for their safety

Howell Heights residents have more fears on their plate after destructive rains flooded their homes causing a wall to collapse on a resident's vehicle.

MONDAY night’s heavy rains and subsequent flooding have left Howell Road residents fearing for their safety and questioning the stability of their homes.

Recounting the events on Monday night, Maxine Abdie, a resident of Howell Heights said, a neighbour had advised her at around 6.30pm, to move her car from where it was parked because the “wall and concrete was shifting”.

“As I got outside I was shocked by what I saw. A parked Golf which belongs to a neighbouring resident of Howell Heights had been moved from where it was parked on the driveway by the water which was flooding the area. The wall shifted and caused the retaining wall below to collapse onto another neighbour’s vehicle,” she said.

“Thankfully no one was injured in the incident. We believe the damages occurred due to poor workmanship and also the heavy rains over the past days,” said the worried resident.

Abdie said residents were now more concerned than ever over the stability and safety of their homes. This just added to their concerns over a battle of ownership of their homes with First Metro Housing. Earlier this month residents had gathered to protest Red Ant evictions.

“First Metro Housing is undergoing investigation regarding the ownership of our homes. We want to know now who will pay for the damages done and are we safe in our homes? We take for granted these flats were built in a proper manner (five years ago) but with the events on Monday night, it leaves many of us unsure of our safety,” she added.
