THE woman who appeared at the Durban Magistrates Court last week on charges of child stealing was re-arrested on Tuesday this week.
According to Captain Kephu Ndlovu, communications officer at Durban Central SAPS, a Durban Central FCF detective was investigating the kidnapping of a baby after the child’s mother laid a complaint that a woman had offered to help her get home from hospital when she was discharged after giving birth. They had been waiting at a taxi rank when the woman offered to give the mother money for airtime, but disappeared with the child by the time she got back. Detectives tracked the 33-year-old woman, Sweleni Dladla down to her home close to Hillcrest and found the baby which was returned to its mother. However, upon further investigations this week, detectives discovered a 5-year-old boy at the woman’s home. “The woman was re-arrested when she could not explain how she got the little boy. The child has been taken to a place of safety while detectives continue their investigations. It is alleged that the child was stolen five years ago,” explained Ndlovu.
He said DNA evidence will be correlated in due course to establish the child’s biological mother.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon for bail application.
