Living legends recognised
Living Legends were honoured by the eThekwini Municipality at the weekend.
THE 9th annual Living Legends awards took place at a prestigious awards evening held on Saturday 3 September.
Hosted by the eThekwini Municipality together with its partners, Old Mutual and uKhozi FM, the event honoured 10 worthy past or current residents of eThekwini for their contribution to the legacy of the nation, categorised by arts and culture, sports, academia and human rights.
The list of finalists included Dr Sazi Dlamini, Tu Nokwe, Professor Kate Wells, Cedric Nunn, Obed “3” Gumede, Dr Naledi Pandor, Mac Maharaj, Lt-Gen Vejay Ramlakan, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman and Alzina Zondi.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Fawzia Peer, congratulated all 10 finalists and outlined how the eThekwini Living Legends Awards has evolved from an annual one-day event into a programme that now forms part of the eThekwini Heritage.
“The municipality goes to great lengths to identify and honour its ‘living legends’, and is in the process of building a multi-million rand central library that will house the Living Legends Museum. In this way we will keep their legacies alive and ensure that they inspire the people of eThekwini for generations to come,” she said.
uKhozi FM station manager Bonga Mpanza said that the SABC’s mandate extends beyond its primary aim to inform, educate and entertain. As the National Public Service Broadcaster the SABC is also actively involved in national key priorities and social transformation.
