City’s failure to act leaves residents with ‘hole’ lot of trouble
A resident has reported that a portion of the road in Larch Road, Morningside, has subsided, but is concerned that nothing has been done to fix it.
AN ever-expanding hole in Larch Road Morningside poses a risk to pedestrians and motorists says resident, Stephanie Fynn.
Fynn says she has watched the hole get steadily bigger for over a year and despite reporting it to the municipality, no action has been taken to fix the road and she has given up all hope.
Fynn said she was afraid someone would either fall into the hole and hurt themselves badly, or a car would drive into it and be damaged. Recently, she said, a woman driving a mini had driven into the hole and her vehicle had got stuck. She explained that the hole started out as a crack in the road, but after a truck had parked over it, it had begun to subside.
“I first reported the hole on 16 March 2015, and have called the municipality numerous times since, receiving many reference numbers. I finally gave up in July this year after I called the last time. I have had no joy, and the hole is just getting worse,” she said.
Fynn said she had noticed workers fixing other holes in the road, with a hole near the top of the road having been fixed two weeks ago and said she had asked the workers to fix this one as well.
“I was told I had to contact the people in the pavements department,” she said.
She said she was concerned as the hole was also close to a fire hydrant.
“It is ridiculous that it has taken this long and nothing has been done,” she said.
Ward councillor, Martin Meyer, said he was not aware of the problem, and would look into it. “I will investigate and get the relevant department to fix this hole,” he said.
