Parks to investigate ‘problem tree’

The Parks Department has said it will see what solution can be come up with regarding a Jacaranda tree in Princess Alice Avenue.

THE large Jacaranda tree in Prince Alice Avenue which has raised concerns among residents along the road, is to be inspected by the eThekwini Municipality.

Responding to queries by Berea Mail, Grahame Steele from the Parks Department said the department would inspect this tree and determine what was required to either prune and lighten the weight of the tree or, as a last resort, cut the tree down.

“Many Jacarandas in the urban centres, including this particular one are indeed aging and diseased street trees which require full arboriculture attention and in many cases removal, because they have reached the end of their life cycle,” he said.

Resident, Melody Tempest and her landlady, Eileen Bestel, raised the alarm as they feared the tree, which is leaning at a precarious angle and is full of white ants, would collapse into the road.

“Eileen and I have to drive in and out of the property all the time, and I am scared something is going to happen to us! I now have the number for the ward councillor, and will contact her to see if she can speed things up,” Tempest said on Tuesday.

Councillor Mmabatho Tembe said she would visit the resident, and would investigate what could be done about the tree.
