Metro to act on blue container eyesore
Councillor Mmabatho Tembe is pushing for a container to be moved from Teignmouth Road.
AN unsightly blue container, which was placed in Teignmouth Road more than a month ago, is yet to be moved, despite the ward councillor warning the owner that it must go.
Residents said the container appeared one morning, dropped off by a pantechnicon. The container served as a hairdresser salon which operated from 6am every day.
Resident Johan de Beer said he had approached the people working in the salon and told them they could not place the container in the road as it was a servitude, however they said the municipality had given permission for them to operate.
“We sent a letter to the councillor and the business was closed down five weeks ago, but the container is still here! Again I was told by the people running the business that they are able to carry on if the residents approve it, but people don’t want it here,” said de Beer.
Another resident, Vivienne Upton-Watterson, sent numerous emails to the ward councillor and municipality during September to have the container removed.
“I think the municipality should impound it, as is done with abandoned cars, to sell it to defray expenses,” she said.
Ward councillor Mmabatho Tembe said it was becoming quite an issue to have the container removed.
“I am trying to enforce this, and have notified Metro Police. I have spoken to the owner of the container to have it removed, and have told them that it will be easier for them to remove it, than if Metro Police does,” she said.
She said the owner had been served and the business was officially closed down. “The issue of having the container removed has been escalated to Metro and I am waiting for them to respond,” she said.
