Man drowns in canal
A 25-year-old man drowned in a canal in the Point area on Sunday morning.
DURBAN and Port Shepstone Search and Rescue police yesterday searched a canal in the Point area to recover the body of an Umkomaas man, Justin Hofman, 25, who was last seen swimming in the canal early Sunday morning.
Police spokesman Lieutenaant-Colonel Thulani Zwane, Hoffman drowned in a 3m deep section of the canal on Sunday morning. According to media reports, a woman who lives in a nearby block of flats heard a scream and looked out a window to see a man swimming in the canal. The woman only realised the man was in trouble when she heard him scream again and dashed out the building to help. Sadly, by the time she and a security guard got to the canal, Hofman had already disappeared under the water. She dived into the canal to look for him but could not find him.
Zwane confirmed police would open an inquest docket.
