Volunteers needed at orchid nursery
Gardening enthusiasts are encouraged to help out at the orchid nursery at Durban Botanic Gardens.
IF you have some extra time on your hands, and don’t mind getting your fingers dirty, the Durban Botanic Gardens needs you.
Janet Gates, a senior horticulturist at the Gardens, said at present there is a dedicated team of Janet, Hendrelien Peters and Richard Lundie, and they desperately need a couple of enthusiastic people to assist with a variety of tasks in the orchid nursery during the week. “This is one of the other areas in the Gardens where labour is short during the heavy orchid repotting season. Volunteers would ease the load!” she said.
She said people are needed to repot orchids, weed, sweep and move things around in the nursery, on Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 8am and 2pm.
“Even if it’s just for a few hours in the morning or afternoon, it will help a lot. Volunteers don’t need to have any experience with orchids. This nursery is the background to what visitors see on display in the orchid house at the Gardens, and it is fun to peek behind the scenes to what happens to make the display house what it is,” she said.
Volunteers would need to wear old clothes, as this is an outdoor activity, and bring along an apron, gloves, a hat, water and eats.
