Literacy drive a success

The Rotaract Club of Durban Berea donated books and furniture to a needy creche outside of Durban.

THE Rotaract Club of Durban Berea, a division of Rotary International, successfully concluded its recent literacy drive.

Members of the club travelled  to Ndwedwe with the Feed the Babies team where they were able to spend time with the little ones and drop off the reading books, colouring-in books, posters, chairs, tables and other stationery items at Siyakula Creche.

“We are so grateful for all the support we have received to make this project possible – although we gain our legitimacy from the Rotary Club of Durban Berea, we fund all our projects ourselves. The success of this project was solely due to the support we received from our community and are very grateful for this. Although we had to walk 2kms on a muddy road – the excitement and gratitude from the little ones made all of it worth it!” said Whitney Lee Govender, president of the Rotaract Club of Durban Berea.

As part of its fundraising drive, the club held a fundraiser at Pick n Pay Hyper by the Sea in September where it raised over R2 000 by selling boerewors rolls. They also received a donation of books from Charisma Healthcare in Glenwood.
The club is a group of diverse 18-to-30-year-old young people who meet twice a month.
“We aim to make our community a better place while enjoying the company of each other and learning leadership skills,” said Whitney.
