Youth take a stand against violence
The community is invited to the YOUth Against Violence Conference at Glenwood High School.
VIOLENCE is one of the main issues in South Africa and a problem that hinders progession in the nation. It is with this in mind that learners from Glenwood High School decided to take a stand against crime, and will host a YOUth Against Violence Conference at Glenwood High School on Saturday 26 November from 1pm to 5pm. .
Speaking about the conference, Solomuzi Buthelezi, a Grade 11 learner and member of the Durban Youth Council, said: “This project is the first of its kind to be done at Glenwood High School this year, and possibly the Glenwood community, and it brings me great honour to be able to have the opportunity to plan such a project. Projects such as these are scarce in our communities, unfortunately, but I believe that this project is the start of something great in relation to bringing about change through the youth of today in our nation and world wide in the near future.”
He said South Africans, and in particular the youth, were adversely affected by violence.
“It has a domino effect, as the youth are the future of the country moving forward. It’s important that this issue is addressed at youth level before the youth take it up with them moving forward. If this issue is solved at youth level then the future is bright for our country,” he said.
He said this project aimed to instil knowledge to the youth of the day that would help them tackle the problem and hopefully, in the future overcome the issue of violence and bring change in the country. The conference will also serve as a fundraiser for the Jes Foord Foundation to help boost its initiative in helping rape survivors in the community and surrounding communities.
The conference will boast performances and speeches by various speakers who will address the issue of violence. These performances include dance, poetry, music, rap and soloists. Drinks and snacks will be sold and tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
Tickets are R50. To find out more, contact Solomuzi on 078 431 0891 or thuladub@gmail.com.
