Wellness Day a success

Refugee Social Services commemorated World Aids day and 16 days of Activism for No Violence towards women and children with a wellness day.

REFUGEE Social Services in partnership with Diakonia Centre commemorated World Aids Day and 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children with a free wellness day for all the clients they serve.

Ayesha Ameen and Nafisa Hansa, social work managers at Refugee Social Services said, “The Pink Ladies did breast examinations, optometrists had eye tests, hearing tests, blood pressure, oral hygiene specialists gave oral health talks and handed out toothbrushes while LifeLine did HIV testing and counselling.”

Ameen added some of RSS’s own clients who had been part of their vocational skills programme also gave hand and neck massages to those seeking health services. “Ever our peer educators spoke to clients about sex health, HIV counselling, information on gender based violence an their rights,” she said.

Pink Drive‘s Janice Beneke, said she was happy to be part of the wellness day. “We are really pleased to be here and because many of the ladies have not done testing before. The refugee Social Services gave us a French translator to help us with the testing and we have had to make referrals already for full examinations at a hospital. We can’t stress enough about early detection and how it can save lives because we believe prevention is better than cure,” she added
