Busy weekend for paramedics
An elderly woman died and many others were injured in two accidents in Durban at the weekend.
RESCUE Care paramedics responded to two accidents in Sandile Thusi (Argyle) Road at the weekend.
In the first incident, five people were injured, one critically, after three vehicles collided at the intersection of Sandile Thusi and Sylvester Ntuli (Brickhill) Roads on Friday morning.
According to Garrith Jamieson, operations director of Rescue Care, paramedics found that one man, who had been a passenger in the vehicle had sustained critical injuries. Advanced life support paramedics placed the man on a manual ventilator on the scene before transporting him to hospital. He said a further four other patients had sustained various injuries and were all stabilised before being transported to hospital.
Jamieson said the SAPS were on the scene and would be investigating the cause of the collision.
Ceron Lennox, advanced life support paramedic from Rescue Care said one person was killed and 11 others, including children, were injured, after two vehicles collided at the intersection of Stalwart Simelane and Sandile Thusi Roads on Saturday evening.
“Paramedics called for more ambulances and multiple advanced life support units were dispatched to the scene. An elderly woman, who had suffered major injuries, passed away before paramedics could arrive and was declared deceased on the scene. Three children were also injured, two critically, and they were stabilised on the scene before being rushed to a level one trauma unit for urgent medical care,” said Lennox.
Eight adults were also injured, one critically, and a man in his 20s was placed on a manual ventilator on the scene before being transported to hospital.
“All the other injured were also stabilised on the scene before being transported to various Durban hospitals. At this stage the exact cause of the collision is unknown however the SAPS Accident Unit was on the scene and will be investigating further,” said Lennox.
