People conned with job offers
Prospective workers were conned into believing they had been offered job positions at a local school.
UMBILO SAPS warns people to never deposit money in response to adverts on the internet promising jobs, following an incident surrounding job offers at a local school.
According to Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS, people had seen an advert online (www.indeed.co.za) with a link to Gumtree, offering jobs at Eden College in Glenwood. She said towards the end of last year, the principal, Chris Marcellin, started receiving calls regarding a general worker vacancy at the school. She said the salary offered for this position was R12 000.
“He had told the people that there were no positions available at the school, however on 20 January, people started arriving at the school for interviews and orientation. Some came ready to start work as they were told this was their first day,” she said.
Makaula said adverts were posted offering positions for teachers, admin people and general workers.
“The person who had spoken to them was an alleged HR manager named Arnold Madonsela, who didn’t exist. People arrived, some from as far as Pongola, looking for this man at Eden College,” she said.
She said Marcellin realised this was a scam, as people had been told to deposit R5 000, some R2 000 and others R10 000 for these positions.
Marcellin went to the Umbilo police station with these people to open cases.
“We urge people not to deposit money for any kind of employment,” said Makaula.
