WATCH: KZN conjoined twins successfully separated
Pongola conjoined twins, Nkosingiphile and Simphiwe Mbuyisa, have been successfully separated at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital.
NKOSINGIPHILE and Simphiwe Mbuyisa the conjoined twins from Pongola, have been successfully separated at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. One of the babies is now able to breathe without the help of machines, while the other is still on life support.
Dr Harshavadan Mackanjee, who led a team of 25 specialists consisting of neonatologists, paediatric surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiology, anaesthesia, plastic surgeons, rursing staff, staff, and hospital management said he was very optimistic and happy with the success of the operation.
The twins are being kept in hospital for observation and are expected to be discharged after six weeks. The entire operation spanned 13 hours and the babies were returned to the neonatal ICU in a stable condition.
MEC for health in the Province, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said it was only in a public health care institution that such a team of specialists could be mobilized and assembled to perform a surgical operation of this nature at no cost to the patient.
Unable to control her joy,Fikile Mbuyisa, the mother of the twins, said: “I am very happy and thank the doctors for a sterling job, I am also happy that the hospital has made me feel at home and I am also confident that my babies are safe and comfortable.”
