A gang of four alleged prostitutes were arrested by an Umbilo SAPS patrol, as they attempted to rob a man who had stopped his vehicle at a traffic light in Ester Roberts Road.
Captain Pumzile Makaula of Umbilo SAPS said on 31 March, a motorist was driving along Esther Roberts Road and had just stopped at a traffic light when the four women jumped into his vehicle. One of the women snatched a chain off his neck. As the man jumped out his vehicle, the women followed and searched him.
A SAPS vehicle patrol happened to drive by at that moment and stopped to assist the man and arrested the four women.
It was later discovered that the women were linked to another common robbery incident that had occurred earlier in Ferguson Road. A woman had been walking along the road when the four women approached her and grabbed her bag.
At Umbilo SAPS holding cells, a fight broke out between the four women and police transferred them to Durban Central Police Station where they continued to fight among themselves. Police had to separate the women and placed each in her own cell. Sadly, one of the women, commited suicide by hanging herself with her leggings.
Her accomplices are due to appear in court this week.
