Man defrauds road accident fund

A man is in custody for R6 million road accident fund fraud.

DURBAN Commercial Crime Hawks members arrested a 56-year-old man for defrauding the Road Accident Fund of approximately R6 million.

The man allegedly submitted a false claim stating that he was involved in a car accident. He alleged that he suffered serious injuries and was declared a paraplegic.

According to Capt Simphiwe Mhlongo from provincial SAPS, the Hawks received information and began their investigation which led to his arrest.

He appeared briefly in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Monday, 14 August and was remanded in custody. The case was postponed to 21 August for formal bail application. Mhlongo said the Hawks expect more arrests on the matter to follow.
