Umbilo residents plagued by burst pipes

There were two burst pipes in Elgie Road, Umbilo, last week.

ONGOING issues with water pipes in Elgie Road, Umbilo, has prompted ward councillor Mmabatho Tembe to email the deputy city manager responsible for infrastructure.

Tembe said on Monday, 4 February, a pipe burst in the road for the second time in a month, adding that time taken to fix this pipe was nothing less than 12 hours.

“Residents woke up again on Wednesday morning to yet another burst pipe. I reported the issues and requested a water tanker to provide water for residents on the days they were affected,” she said.

Tembe confirmed that she had spoken to one of the contractors on site about why the pipes had burst and was told her the infrastructure was old and needed to be replaced.

“I have sent an email to the deputy city manager who is responsible for infrastructure asking for a full investigation of this road and the frequent burst pipes. I have pleaded with the municipality to fix this issue and replace the pipes. Residents deserve better than living with constant battles of no water,” she said.

In May last year, Berea Mail published an article on the frequent burst pipes in Elgie Road. At the time, resident Anita Mc Intyre had kept a record of the number of bursts in the road, stating there had been 15 bursts between 18 September 2017 and mid-February 2018. She said that Elgie Road was a small road that endured burst pipes every month.
