Umbilo SAPS nabs alleged car jammers, suspects accused of bribery

Station Commander of Umbilo, Col Teddy Munusamy, congratulated the officers following a number of arrests in Umbilo last week.

THE station commander at Umbilo SAPS has commended police officers for good arrests made in the area over the past week.

In one incident, three men were arrested at a warehouse in Williams Road, Umbilo on 3 November.

Commenting on the case, Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS said at around 4pm the National Intervention Unit, Crime intelligence and the Tactical Response Team arrested two suspects for the possession of signal jamming devices.

“lt is alleged that the warehouse in Williams Road was owned by one of the suspects. A third suspect was arrested for bribery. lt is alleged that the suspects tried to bribe the police with a large sum of money. The suspects will be linked to other cases,” she said.

 In a second case on 4 November, officers from Umbilo Crime Prevention were conducting stop and search operations in Sydney Road near King Edward hospital when they arrested men for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and dangerous weapons.

“Durban the stop and search operation, officers searched four men who were walking on the road.  A pistol with a magazine and four live rounds of ammunition were found on one of the men. A gas pistol and two knives were found on the other men,” said Makaula.

She said the firearm was registered to a Mr Ngcobo, whose address is unknown at this stage, and the weapon had not been reported as stolen. The suspects will be profiled to link them to other cases in the area.

In another case on 3 November, at around 8pm, officers from Umbilo Crime Prevention were informed of a housebreaking in progress at the intersection of Dalton Road and Gale Street.

“Video footage showed 20 suspects, nine of which, six women and three men, were arrested in Dalton Hostel. The goods were recovered and handed back to the rightful owner,” said Makaula.

She said police are investigating a case of housebreaking and theft.
