Youth group highlights the importance of education

INSPIRED by the heroic efforts of Hector Pieterson, who was killed during the Soweto Uprising in 1976, local non-profit organisation, Epic Youth Matters recently hosted a programme to commemorate Youth Month.

Director of the NPO, Michelle Chetty, said the two events, which were hosted in different locations, celebrated youth, created awareness on gender-based violence and highlighted the importance of education.

The female youth gathered at Durban Botanic Gardens and their discussions centred around maintaining a high self-esteem and expanding their education. The boys met at Mitchell Park and also engaged in empowering conversations.

“We want girls to feel independent and beautiful. We want to help our girls to choose better. With our boys, we want to help them to choose education, make goals for themselves, choose the right path and be honourable,” she said.

Chetty added that the aim of the event was to also remind youth about the importance of education and the sacrifices that were made for them in 1976.

A youth member from Sydenham, Msizi Danisa said, “I have learned to believe in myself and motivate myself to not give up in life. These kind of gatherings helps us as youth. It helps keep us motivated and not to be indoors all the time. Being indoors doesn’t help me to experience life, so it is good to be out with other peers having such important talks.”
