EThekwini approves SA Open golf series sponsorship

AN investment of R5 million has been approved by the eThekwini Municipality executive committee as part of the city’s sponsorship deal for the DP World Tour Investec South African Open Golf and Business Event Series, which will be held at the Durban Country Club from February 27 to March 2.

THE Durban Country Club and the eThekwini Municipality are gearing up to host one of the world’s biggest golf tournaments, the DP World Tour Investec South African Open Golf and Business Event Series, following the approval of a R5 million sponsorship deal by the city’s executive committee.

The four-day series, now in its 114th year, will see 156 professional golfers descend on the city for the tournament which will be held at the Durban Country Club from February 27 to March 2. According to eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, the deal is a lucrative one for both the city and the club.

She said, “The total sponsorship rights package is R5 million, securing sustained Durban coverage over a five-month period and reaching more than 1.25 billion viewers.”

The series is expected to create a number of job opportunities with the business community backing the tournament. “The business sector has enthusiastically welcomed the hosting of the event and has contributed over R4 million towards the improvement and readiness of the Durban Country Club to host this highly anticipated South African Open. This event is expected to make a significant contribution to the City’s economy as well as create jobs,” said Sisilana.

According to Golf RSA, a unified body of the South African Golf Association and Women’s Golf South Africa, the golf industry contributes R49 billion, or roughly 4% of the Gross Domestic Product, to the South African economy and employs about 40 000 people annually.
