Durban mops up after ruthless heavy rain, wind

Ongoing rainfall in Durban and across the province continue to leave a mark of devastation for residents and motorists who are cautioned to minimise travel unless its essential. Emergency rescue, police and government departments are making necessary interventions for those affected.

RESIDENTS are mopping up the ruins of last night’s heavy rains that bashed the province, with devastating impact in Durban and surrounding areas.
Heavily impacted areas include Glenmore, Overport, North Beach, CBD, Sherwood, Greyville.

While the rains are expected to continue, authorities advise residents to stay indoors and delay or cancel non-essential travelling.
Durban Metro has advised motorists to exercise extreme caution following last night’s heavy rainfall and to avoid driving through water if unsure of its depth.

Damage includes flooded roads and driveways, trees falling on property and vehicles, debris, mud slides, overflowing drainage systems and fallen walls.

The KZN Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has assured residents that disaster response teams are working around the clock to rescue residents who are trapped by the floods.
“Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our residents,” stated MEC Buthelezi. “We are working tirelessly to assist those affected by the floods and to lessen further damage.”

At this moment, no fatalities have been reported. However, residents are urged to take extreme care and avoid travelling in affected areas.
