Students make a colourful impact
IIE-Vega Durban Voice is making a huge impact in communities throughout Durban with the student body dedicating their time to improving the lives of those in need.
MORNINGSIDE resident and IIE-Vega Durban student S’bahle Dlamini was among the cohort of his peers and academics that recently made an impact by adding colour to the lives of people in need of occupational therapy (OT).
Head of academic operations at IIE-Vega Durban, Nadira Sewnunan, said a fourth year OT student from UKZN, Savannah Prange, requested help to brighten up the Sea Cow Lake Clinic in Kenville where she and Asivenathi Plaatjie are completing clinical hours.
“She asked if our students could create a mural on the container used for therapy sessions. Since we were planning a team building activity for our IIE-Vega Voice students, we decided to turn it into something more meaningful,” said Sewnunan.
“The students collaborated on the designs, approved by the clinic management, and spent the day bringing the mural to life. The local children even joined in. The teamwork and enthusiasm were amazing.”

As part of an IIE-Vega Voice (student body) team building project, the group painted a mural on a metal container used by the OT team, combining creativity and community upliftment. Dlamini, a second year Bachelor of Commerce in Digital Marketing student, said, “We arrived early, ready to work and help. It meant the world to be trusted with this project. Being part of IIE-Vega Voice means we all get a chance to make a difference.”
The OT students provide services for a range of conditions including stroke recovery, spinal cord injuries, arthritis and cognitive impairments, as well as paediatric therapy for children with developmental delays, autism and cerebral palsy.
Prange said, “There was no dedicated therapy space and previous students had to see patients wherever space allowed. When we got the metal container, we wanted to transform it into a welcoming therapy space and we thought, who better than IIE-Vega students to help us do that? We are so grateful for their support.”
