Glenwood High School launches Clive Barker soccer festival

Glenwood High School is gearing up to honour the legacy of its Old Boy and legendary national coach, the late Clive Barker. This weekend will see Under-16 soccer teams battle it out in the inaugural Clive Barker Festival.

GLENWOOD High School proudly hosted the inaugural Clive Barker Cup, paying tribute to one of South Africa’s iconic football figures and a beloved Old Boy of the school in 2023 and 2024 as part of the Football Against Femicide match.

This event has now grown into the inaugural Clive Barker U16 Soccer Festival, which will be held on June 21.

“We are proud to host the inaugural Clive Barker U16 Soccer Festival, bringing together top U16 soccer teams from across KZN for a day of competitive football, camaraderie, and tribute to a national icon,” shared Khaya Mngwengwe, soccer director at the school.

“Best known for guiding the SA national team to victory in the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations and for helping Bafana Bafana qualify for their first FIFA World Cup in 1998, Barker’s legacy extends far beyond accolades. His passion for the sport broke down social barriers during apartheid, giving opportunities to countless players from all backgrounds,” added Mngwengwe

“Clive’s contribution to football wasn’t just about silverware,” said his son John Barker, filmmaker of Soccer South of the Umbilo. “It was about his love for people and the beautiful game, and how he used that passion to unite and uplift others.”

Participating teams include in Group A – Glenwood High School, Westville Boys’ High School, Queensburgh High School and Pinetown Boys’ High School. Group B will include Durban Academy, Northwood School, Hillcrest High School and Maritzburg College.

Mngwengwe hopes the festival will grow in leaps and bounds over the years, hosting more teams from outside KZN, over a period of three to four days.

The matches will commence at 08:30 at Dixon Field and Bassons Field. Gates will open at 07:00. The public is welcome – R20 for adults, R10 for pensioners and scholars, and free for children under six. Parent facilities include Bring & Braai and complementary tea and coffee at the pavilion.

The action from both fields will be livestreamed on the SuperSport Schools App. For more information, contact Khaya Mngwengwe on 081 247 4902.
