Man dies, four injured in structural collapse in popular shopping centre

A structural collapse in the Springfield Shopping Centre has claimed one life, while four other construction workers have been rushed to hospital.

ONE construction worker died and four others were injured this morning when a scaffolding gave way at a shopping centre in Springfield.

ALS Paramedic spokesperson Garrith Jamieson reported that the incident took place around 11:00 today.
“We responded to the incident at a popular shopping centre, in Springfield Shopping Centre, off Umgeni Road. Initial reports show that the construction team was working on a scaffolding when it gave way, falling approximately 6m to the ground. There was chaos, as we discovered that five workers were injured, one of whom, a male around 40 years old, sustained serious injuries and was declared dead on the scene. The rest, with moderate to critical injuries, were stabilised and rushed to the nearby hospital for further medical care.”
The cause of the collapse has not been established and SAPS are investigating the matter.
