Emeris launch marks new chapter in private higher education

Varsity College, Vega and MSA are coming together under one bold new name — Emeris. Backed by a R420m mega campus and cutting-edge facilities, Emeris is set to change the face of private higher education in South Africa.

THE Independent Institute of Education (IIE), part of the ADvTECH Group, has entered a new chapter into its history books with the launch of Emeris, a new private higher education brand that will bring together Varsity College, Vega School, and MSA under one name.

Set to take effect in 2026, the consolidation comes as South Africa prepares for legislative reforms that could allow qualifying private institutions to be recognised as universities for the first time. ADvTECH Group CEO Geoff Whyte said, “The simplification of our premium brand structures under the Emeris name marks a significant step on our journey to be recognised as a university.”

He said that this move will strengthen the institution’s position as the leading provider of private tertiary education in South Africa. Coupled with the building of a R420m state-of-the-art mega campus in Sandton, Johannesburg, and the merger, Emeris is set to dominate within the higher education sector.

“Emeris represents a bold step forward for private higher education in South Africa,” said Louise Wiseman, managing director of Emeris. “With this unification, we will enhance our ability to deliver exceptional higher education by consolidating resources and expertise.”

Emeris will build on more than 30 years of private higher education leadership. Of its 300 academics, 203 hold Master’s or Doctorate degrees, with 87 currently pursuing doctorates. The institution already offers over 40 postgraduate programmes, including 13 Master’s and three Doctoral qualifications, and recently became the only private institution in South Africa accredited by the Engineering Council of SA.

“There will be no impact on the 2026 student intake. We are working towards developing an Emeris precinct, which will include sport facilities and student residences to consolidate the Durban campuses, with the aim of opening by 2030. In the meantime, Vega Durban will be renamed Emeris Umhlanga and will continue to operate as Vega School within the Emeris brand, offering the same programmes with the same leadership, lecturers and support teams,” said Wiseman.

She explained the inspiration behind the name: “It draws from ‘Ephemeris’ (the trajectory of celestial objects) and ‘Emeritus’ (merit and earned success), symbolising the individual path to achievement. When we open our doors in 2026, Emeris will mark the beginning of a new era for South African higher education.”
