St Cyprian’s Church to host Baroque Christmas celebration

A festive morning of Baroque splendour awaits music lovers as acclaimed trumpeter Yosuke Matsui and organist Margrit Deppe present a Christmas concert inspired by the works of JS Bach at St Cyprian’s Anglican Church on December 21.

A CELEBRATION of Baroque music in the spirit of Christmas will take centre stage at St Cyprian’s Anglican Church on Umbilo Road on Sunday, December 21, at 11:00 when Music for Trumpet and Organ: A Baroque Christmas with JS Bach is presented.

The concert will feature Yosuke Matsui on trumpet and Margrit Deppe on the newly refurbished church organ, offering audiences a “glorious morning” of festive music rooted in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The programme includes both trumpet-and-organ repertoire and solo organ works, alongside short hymns, carols, and praise and worship pieces arranged for the occasion.

Matsui is a Yamaha performing artist and principal trumpet of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra. His distinguished career includes appointments as principal trumpet with the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra and the Chiba Symphony Orchestra in Japan, as well as service as a tutti trumpet player with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Australia.

Deppe studied church music in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, and holds a BA Honours degree from UKZN. Tickets are priced at R130, with concessions at R100, available in advance via Quicket or for cash at the door.

Off-road, guarded parking is available at the church. Audience members are invited to enjoy tea and coffee after the concert, with the pub also open. The concert is supported by the KZN Performing Arts Trust and the KZN Philharmonic.
