Outrage as municipal worker sweeps waste into storm drain
An eThekwini Municipality employee is under investigation after a viral video showed waste being swept into a stormwater drain.
AN eThekwini Municipality employee is under investigation following a viral social media video showing her sweeping waste into a nearby storm drain instead of removing it.
In the one minute and 26 seconds video, the employee dressed in full uniform can be seen using a rake to gather the waste before looking around and pushing it down the drain. The employee proceeds to gather more, pushing it in as well before she walks away to collect paper littered around the embankment.
The video went viral yesterday, prompting the City to launch an investigation. Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the City was taking this matter seriously while confirming that an internal investigation into the conduct of the official concerned is underway.
“Internal processes will be followed to ensure procedural fairness for all parties involved,” said Sisilana. “The City strongly condemns this behaviour because improper disposal of waste into stormwater drains negatively impact the environment by polluting waterways and harming ecosystems.”

She added, “Appropriate corrective measures will be implemented based on the outcome of the investigation.”
Meanwhile on social media, the video caused outrage from ratepayers with some raising the issue of how the drains were blocked, leading to flooding and the loss of lives. Sean Patrick Webster on the municipal Facebook page commented, “This happens every day, that’s why roads are flooded when it rains. Laziness is on the increase???”
While Mluleki Shezi wrote, “Imagine if this incident occurred in camera — how many more cases do you think were not captured? Please educate your employees, as these actions have a negative impact on the environment.”
Others begged for leniency on the employee’s behalf. Malcolm Julian Louw said, “I wouldn’t want the lady dismissed. She needs to be educated and given a warning.” His view was shared by Siyabonga Ndebele who said, “Warning will be fair in this case.”
Sisilana encouraged the public to report any misconduct by City employees anonymously to the City Integrity and Investigation Directorate by calling the toll-free line 0800 20 20 20.
