Candidates warned against paid matric rewrite scam

The Department of Basic Education has warned matriculants about fake social media posts charging fees for the free Second Chance Programme.

THE Department of Basic Education (DBE) has noted fraudulent social media posts that have recently surfaced, offering paid matric rewrite programmes under the guise of being offered by the department.

According to DBE, the official initiative for rewriting Grade 12 is called the Second Chance Programme.
“The Department of Basic Education wishes to clarify that the official Second Chance Programme for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations is provided free of charge to candidates who were unsuccessful in their initial attempt, and officially distances itself from the posts.

“Eligible individuals may register to rewrite or add subjects without any payment, in accordance with the Department’s policies for the May/June examination cycle. The Department does not endorse any private or commercial services that require payment for participation in the Second Chance Programme,” DBE clarified.

For authentic information, candidates are advised to contact the Department of Basic Education directly or visit the official website: https://www.education.gov.za/Programmes/SecondChanceProgramme.aspx

Registration for the May/June 2026 cycle will open in due course.
