Three years on: AKA remembered as murder case still awaits trial

On the third anniversary of AKA’s killing, his mother Lynn Forbes shared a deeply personal tribute as the murder case remains unresolved.

IT’S been three years since the murder of South African rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes who was gunned down along with his friend and famous chef Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, outside Wish on Florida, on February 10, 2023.

Seven men were arrested for the Run Jozi singer’s and Tibz’ murder, but the matter has yet to go to trial at Durban High Court. Mourning the loss of her son, Lynn Forbes wrote a heartfelt message to AKA on her social media.

In the message Forbes says, “You are not gone, just missing from my life. We had so many moments … highs and lows but these days I choose to remember the highs.”

She fondly remembered his laugh “that was more like a chuckle” and the hugs, the teasing, the small everyday moments that made up their relationship.

“So many of those little things are missing from my days now … your voice calling me … maaaa! The phone calls. The lunches and just lying on the couch watching Dexter or Somebody Please Feed Phil.  The way you ate your ice lollies and chewed very loud sometimes,” wrote Forbes.

She continued, “I miss packing my bags to go live with you every two weeks when it was Kairo’s week with you (I actually never thought I would miss having to pack a bag). It’s really the little things that count the most. I carry it all with me. Every memory. Every version of you. I was lucky enough to know and will always treasure.”

Forbes, who was present as the Durban Magistrate Court when the men accused of pulling the trigger made their first appearance, said, “On our side there is no rush, as long as the process takes the course it needs to take. I’m here for both the boys. I’m happy with the extradition and really appreciate all the hours that you have put into this.”

Seven accused face double murder charges

Currently, seven men remain behind bars at Kokstad C-Max prison for the murder of AKA and Tibz. Lindokuhle Mkhwanazi, Lindani Ndimane, Siyanda Myeza, Mziwethemba Gwabeni, and Lindokuhle Ndimande and the alleged trigger men known as the Ndimande siblings, Siyabonga and Malusi, face a string of charges including double murder, attempted murder and money laundering.

The Ndimande brothers were arrested in 2024 by the Royal Eswatini Police Service at a house they were renting in Mbabane and were formally charged upon their return to SA via King Shaka International Airport. They are expected back in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on March 4 and will join the five other accused when they appear at the Durban High Court in July.
