City to host inaugural sport awards, calls for nominations

Nominations are open for the inaugural eThekwini Sports Awards until May 15. Nominees must be based in eThekwini or have made a significant impact within the city’s sporting landscape.

eThekwini municipality announced that it will host its inaugural edition of the eThekwini Sports Awards, a platform aimed at recognising and celebrating athletes, coaches, administrators, teams, and individuals who have excelled in sports and contributed significantly to the development of sport within the city.

“As part of this exciting initiative, the municipality is officially opening the call for nominations for outstanding sports personnel within the eThekwini municipal area,” City spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said.

The City is thus inviting residents, sports organisations, schools, clubs, and community structures to nominate deserving individuals and teams who have demonstrated excellence, dedication, and exceptional performance in their respective sporting codes.

The official date of the awards ceremony has not been revealed.

Sisilana said the Sports Awards would consist of the following categories: Sport Federation of the year, Technical Official of the year, District Sport Confederation, Recreation Program of the year, Grassroot Programme of the year, Volunteer of the year, Coach of the Year, Junior Sportsperson of the year, Sportsperson of the year with disability and the Sportsperson of the year.

“These awards form part of the Municipality’s ongoing commitment to promote sports as a powerful tool for social cohesion, youth development, healthy lifestyles, and economic growth,” she concluded.

Nominations close on May 15 and nominees must be based in eThekwini. Nomination forms are available at Delta Towers 6th floor, Dr Pixley ka Seme Street or on the eThekwini Municipality website: www.durban.gov.za
