Fencing gears up to take up space in Durban
Somewhere between en garde, piste, and flenche lies a burning desire to popularise the sport of fencing in Durban, for youngsters and adults alike.
Fencing KZN, during its presentations, and locally-based champions, including athletes who have represented SA on the international stage, provided a unique opportunity to showcase the sport.
KZN Fencing unpacked their development and transformation initiatives, including plans to expand fencing into township communities, crossing socio-economic barriers.
Vanessa Drimmie, chairperson of Maestro Fencing Club, highlighted that the presentations were an effort to attract more fencers and grow the sport.

“We are trying to attract more people because we win a lot of accolades in the country, and beyond. We recognise there is plenty of talent, but limited resources and access to aspiring athletes limit exposure.
“Once they start training with clubs in different divisions, proper ranking follows, and they ultimately get selected for provincial colours, and may proceed to represent South Africa in international competitions, added Drimmie.
Aspiring fencers from the ages of eight to the elderly (no age restriction) can contact Vanessa on 083 781 7569.
