Masakhane strengthens community engagement in Ward 33

Municipal officials and residents recently came together in Ward 33 to discuss service delivery challenges and explore practical solutions.

EFFORTS to restore public confidence in local government and improve service delivery were strengthened with the rollout of the Masakhane Outreach Programme in Ward 33 on Saturday (May 30).

Residents attending the event at Stella Park Bowling Club had the opportunity to engage directly with various municipal departments, including eThekwini Water and Sanitation, Disaster Management, the Area Based Management (ABM) Unit, Conservation, Waste Management Education, Electricity, Revenue, Human Settlements and the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC).

New Ward 33 resident Yolanda Mahlangu said she was pleased with the information she received during the outreach. “I was reminded to check my voting district,” said Mahlangu.

“When I moved from Durban North to Berea, I never thought about it. Now that I am living here permanently, I needed to update my details. By attending the outreach, I was also able to familiarise myself with the neighbourhood and better understand the challenges facing the ward.”

Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher also welcomed the initiative. “It is through these one-on-one discussions that we grow as a community and work towards realistic solutions to the many challenges we face daily,” she said.

Kristopher praised the collaboration between departments in prioritising the needs of Ward 33 residents. “As public representatives, we share a common responsibility and duty to improve the quality of life of our people, restore confidence in local government, and ensure that service delivery reaches every resident timeously, fairly and efficiently,” she said.

“While we are still far from where we would like to be, I remain hopeful that, through the commitment of these departments and by working together, we can build a stronger community and make our ward a great place to live.”
