R800k illicit alcohol and cigarettes seized in Sydenham raid

Police have warned business owners and consumers of the dangers of illicit alcohol and cigarettes following a major bust in Sydenham.

ILLICIT liquor, counterfeit alcohol and cigarettes with an estimated street value of more than R800 000 were seized by police during a multi-disciplinary operation in Sydenham.

The operation involved members of the SAPS Economic Infrastructure Task Team, Sydenham SAPS, various provincial SAPS units, the KZN SAPS Provincial Counterfeit, Contraband and Illicit Goods Unit, the SARS Customs National Rapid Response Team (Durban Division), the KZN Economic Regulatory Authority (KZNERA) and Durban Metro Police.

eThekwini District SAPS spokesperson Captain Carmen Rhynes said the five targeted compliance inspections resulted in the seizure of a massive haul, including more than 500 boxes of illicit cigarettes and over 1200 litres of illicit alcohol.

“All confiscated contraband was detained and removed for safekeeping pending further investigations,” said Rhynes.

Several businesses found to be non-compliant were also issued notices by KZNERA. The crackdown forms part of ongoing law enforcement efforts to curb the distribution of illicit and counterfeit alcohol and cigarettes.

“The South African Police Service warns business owners and members of the public that the sale and distribution of illicit and counterfeit alcohol and cigarettes is a criminal offence,” said Rhynes who warned consumers and buyers against supporting the illicit trade. “These products pose serious health risks to consumers, deprive the state of revenue and contribute to organised crime.”

She added, “Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities and the sale of illegal goods to their nearest police station or anonymously through the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111.”
