Benson Place fete returns with call for community support
The popular Benson Place Fete returns on July 25, with organisers appealing for donations to support the elderly home.
With just weeks to go before the Benson Place Fete, organisers are appealing to the community for donations to help make the popular fundraiser a success.
The bi-annual fete takes place on Saturday, July 25, at Benson Place, an independent-living old age home on 26 Rapson Road in Morningside. The event raises funds for the daily upkeep of the home, which falls under the Bill Buchanan Association for the Aged, while also helping to provide entertainment and social activities for its elderly residents.
Known for its lively atmosphere, the fete attracts bargain hunters from across Durban and features market stalls, a white elephant table, live music, a tea garden, food vendors, clothing, plants and a variety of hidden treasures.
Rene Gorrie, vice chairperson of the Benson Place Forum, said the funds raised make a meaningful difference to the lives of the home’s 84 residents.

“The aim is to raise enough money to host events for the residents. Most of them do not get to go out much, and some of our residents do not have family nearby, so we try and host as many events as we can to keep them entertained.”
Benson Place has accommodation for more than 100 independent and active older residents. With preparations well underway, the forum is appealing for donations, particularly items for the popular white elephant table.
“The Forum is looking for any donations, items for the white elephant table. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.”
