Helping patients with heart health

A conversation with Dr Wanda Tshabalala

A clear, practical approach to care lies at the heart of Dr Wanda Tshabalala’s work as a specialist cardiologist at Life Westville Hospital – one rooted in making a real, visible difference in his patients’ lives.

“I was drawn to a field where you can treat what you see and directly improve outcomes,” he says. “That clarity mattered to me.” And it’s this philosophy that continues to guide him today.

Much of his early passion was shaped in the cardiac ICU, where every decision counts. But beyond the urgency of critical care, Dr Tshabalala has built his approach around something equally important – connection. He believes patients are far more likely to manage their health when they truly understand it.

“I dedicate time every day to explaining conditions and treatment plans,” he explains. “Understanding plays a vital role.” It’s here that his often-repeated motto comes in: Heart disease should be a lifetime commitment. Even when symptoms ease, he stresses that ongoing care and lifestyle changes remain essential.

He is also quick to challenge a common misconception – that heart disease can be ‘cured’.

“There’s often a honeymoon period after treatment where patients feel fine and stop their medication. That’s when problems start,” he says.

Working within his own community adds another layer of meaning. Having experienced the frustration of limited communication in healthcare himself, he’s made it a priority to do things differently. “Politeness and clear communication go a long way,” he says.

Outside of the hospital, patients might be surprised to find a more relaxed side – whether he’s out for a walk, tuned into UK radio, or indulging his love for motorbike racing, Dr Tshabalala enjoys downtime to recharge.
