Dangerous sinkhole repairs finally underway on Howard Avenue

After enduring four months of glaring hazards on Sir Duncan Road, the community welcomes the repairs of a massive sinkhole.

FINALLY, road users on Howard Avenue and Sir Duncan Roads are breathing a sigh of relief. A huge sinkhole is undergoing repairs since last week, and for the next three weeks, construction teams will be on site.

After a meeting with the eThekwini Roads department, Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher was assured that a contractor was assigned to the project.

“Since the stormwater line collapsed late February, I am pleased to announce the contractor has been assigned and work is underway,” Kristopher said.

In April, the corner of Sir Duncan Road and Howard Avenue in Glenwood, one of the most aesthetically appealing and busiest streets, had residents aggravated. The frustration was due to delayed attention by the City. The sinkhole was expanding daily, especially after heavy rains, posing a glaring hazard to motorists.

The eThekwini Municipality explained that the sinkhole was caused by the partial collapse of an old brick barrel stormwater system. “This legacy infrastructure, constructed before the use of modern concrete pipes, has weakened over time, resulting in sections collapsing inward,” the City said.

Motorists, residents, and pedestrians are advised to take extra caution during the construction period as roads in the vicinity will be cordoned off.
