Two police officers in critical condition after shootout in Mayville

Two police officers were injured on Bellair Road from getting involved in a shootout with perpetrators.

WHILE attempting to arrest perpetrators in Mayville, two SAPS officers have been shot and both injured – one critically.

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the shooting incident occurred on Bellair Road in Mayville just after 18:00 on Thursday, September 1.

“ALS Paramedics Medical Services arrived on the scene to find total chaos. It is believed that the SAPS was attempting to apprehend the perpetrators and a shootout took place,” said Jamieson.

Jamieson said one police member sustained a gunshot wound and was in serious condition.

“He was stabilised on scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics before being rushed through to a nearby Durban hospital for the further treatment that he required,” he said.

The paramedic says a second SAPS member sustained moderate injuries and was stabilised on the scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics before also being transported to a nearby Durban hospital for further treatment.

“At this stage, the events leading up to the incident are unknown, however, SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further,” said Jamieson.
