Police nab suspect linked to spate of armed robberies

The suspect has been linked to a gang wanted by police for armed robbery.

AN alleged gang member was arrested with an unlicensed firearm and stolen property during an intelligence-driven operation on June 26 at 15.00.

Captain Muzi Maphumulo of Durban Central SAPS said the gang has been linked to a spate of armed robberies.

“The suspect is presently being profiled, and it is alleged he is part of a gang sought by the police for a spate of armed robberies in the Durban CBD where he and other accomplices were allegedly involved,” said Maphumulo.

The suspect (24) was arrested after police traced him to a tavern on Russell Street after receiving information about a person carrying a gun.

“On the scene, the field unit confronted a male fitting the description who had a side bag on him. After searching the bag, the suspect was found in possession of a 9mm pistol and one 9mm live round of ammunition. Upon further searching, he was also found in possession of a police appointment certificate,” said Maphumulo.

The said suspect was placed under arrest and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition and for resisting arrest.

The suspect appeared briefly before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on June 27 and was remanded in custody until July 4 for his bail hearing.
