Three men in the dock for stealing R6m worth of copper

Three men face court this Monday after being found in possession of a suspected stolen trailer carrying R6m worth of copper.

POLICE have arrested three foreign nationals after they were found in possession of a suspected stolen trailer and a container which was carrying R6m worth of copper. Both the trailer and the container were reported stolen in Maydon Wharf, Durban, on Wednesday, August 16.

According to SAPS’s Colonel Robert Netshiunda, information at the police’s disposal indicates that a driver, who is also a foreign national, picked up a truck from a terminal on Bremen Road in Bayhead, Durban, on the afternoon of August 16.

“The truck was later found abandoned on Sharkmesher Road in Bayhead, but the trailer and the container with copper were missing, and the driver was nowhere to be found. The matter was reported to the police, and investigations commenced,” said Netshiunda.

Netshiunda said intelligence was then gathered and operationalised, leading to the recovery of the trailer and its loot at a farm in Bishopstowe in Pietermaritzburg. “Three foreign nationals were arrested and were charged for being in possession of suspected stolen property. The suspects are due to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 21,” he concluded.
