City urges residents to renew grave sites

The municipality urges the public to ensure they renew their grave title deeds in time and not risk their family graves being recycled.

THE eThekwini Municipality is appealing to the public to apply to renew their grave title deeds and to apply for grave leases.

This comes as the city faces land scarcity with a burial-space shortage. The municipality urges the public to ensure they renew their grave title deeds in time and not risk their family graves being recycled. Graves with unrenewed title deeds and unclaimed graves will be taken back by the City.

In a statement released by the City last week, a leased grave is any piece of land within a public cemetery laid out or demarcated as a single grave. They said this is in respect of any person who has purchased the exclusive right to use it over a stipulated period. A grave can be leased for 10 years and must be renewed thereafter. If not renewed, the Municipality will remain owners of the gravesite as per by-laws.

In order to lease a grave, residents can visit the 7th floor, Delta Towers Building, 303 Dr Pixley KaSeme Street. Contact 031 311 4581.
