Fabulous Reads: What you need is in this book

Book overview - What You Are Looking for is in this Library by Michiko Aoyama

What You Are Looking for is in this Library, Michiko Aoyama, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9780857529121

What You Are Looking for is in the Library is an adorable Japanese bestseller which has been translated into English (by Alison Watts) and is made up of five short stories all set in the same area – near the library, by the community centre, with the enigmatic librarian, Sayuri Komachi.

Each story takes you into the point of view of a character at a difficult time in their life where they don’t know where to go or what to do. When they meet Ms Komachi, she cryptically gives them direction or advice which changes their mindset and in most cases, their lives, in some way.

Not only is Ms Komachi fascinating and endearing in her mysterious manner of dispensing wisdom, but the stories are unique, delightful and deeply relatable.

The characters are interesting, and Aoyama takes us into their lives in such a short space with sensitivity and skill, showing us how they become empowered as individuals. I loved reading this book so much. It immersed me into Japanese culture which I often find truly delightful when I watch Anime or Japanese series on TV. The stories and wisdom dripping from the pages spoke to me. This book was a true breath of fresh air and a warm, Japanese treat to ‘feast on’ in your comfy chair. 5/5 stars – Kathy Bosman
