DURBAN’S festive season is set to get more exciting with the city soon to be showcased to international audiences in the highly anticipated premiere of the movie A Wesley South African Christmas, which will be aired on BET on December 21.

The film’s plot is based on a businessman, Brian Wesley, who is forced to spend the Christmas holiday in Durban due to a business deal gone awry. However, his plans are complicated by the presence of a boisterous family and their festive antics as they enjoy what the city has to offer to its visitors.

EThekwini Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, said the film not only celebrates the magic of Christmas but also highlights Durban’s stunning landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage. He said, “The filming of this Hollywood production in Durban showcases our city’s breathtaking scenery and rich cultural tapestry. As a growing hub for film tourism, Durban offers filmmakers and visitors an unforgettable blend of spectacular backdrops, warm hospitality, and diverse heritage.”

As the third chapter in the trilogy, A Wesley South African Christmas brings together top South African and American talent with a stellar cast that includes US stars Dorien Wilson, Judi Johnson, TC Carson, and Jasmine Guy, alongside SA A-listers Naymaps Maphalala, Dineo Langa, Jesse Suntele, Baby Cele, Bohang Moeko, and Trevor Gumbi among others.

The film cements Durban Tourism’s partnership with Paramount Pictures for the next two financial years, namely 2024/25 and 2025/26. The partnership will include the production of a 30-minute destination lifestyle documentary to be broadcast by major TV channels, including MTV Africa, MTV Base, and BET Channel; a production of a 60-second television commercial to be flighted on MTV, BET, and Nickelodeon Kids channel; and the production of short video clips that will be compressed into social media reels.

“The agreement will also see the use of three Paramount presenters per year at a discounted cost for influencer activities in selected Durban Tourism activations,” said municipal spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana.  She said, “The aim is to attract black Americans who are looking to Africa for a sense of belonging and want to offer support to previously disadvantaged communities. This is seen to be good for tourism transformation hence Durban Tourism is strengthening the relationship with Paramount’s BET and MTV.”

The film’s executive producers, Bree and Chuck West of Octet Productions, said “Collaborating with South African talent has been an inspiring journey. This project is a testament to the strength of cultural exchange.” Monde Twala, senior vice president and general manager of Paramount Africa and lead at BET International, said, “This film is a testament to South Africa’s creative prowess. It bridges continents and communities, spotlighting the richness of our culture on the international stage.”
