Umbilo’s Tesoriere Pool to stay open despite safety concerns
Tesoriere Swimming Pool stays open for summer despite safety concerns raised by Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher.
TESORIERE Swimming Pool will remain open to the public during the summer season despite objection from Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher who has raised safety concerns.
“While the decision by officials to keep the pool open goes against my advice, I will, however, at this stage alert the community and visitors to use the pool at your own risk,” said Kristopher following her recent oversight visit to the pool.
Her concern stems from various issues such as “multiple floor and wall tiles chipped and damaged”. “I have also been informed that eight persons have incurred injuries and cuts to date,” said Kristopher.
She said the pool is also used by community Midmar swimmers for training purposes who have been advised of the dangers. “I also have taken into consideration the lack of fully operational swimming pools across the city and the challenges facing this department; I am still apprehensive to these overruled decisions made by this department,” she said.

The pool remaining open was met with jubilation from some members of the community. A resident had urged Kristopher to reconsider the decision to push for a “shut down of the pool during the hottest months”.
“It’s a vital resource for hundreds of children,” said the resident. “Given that the safety markers (red tape markers) are already in place and there is ample staff to supervise and instruct, it seems feasible to keep the pool open with proper management.”
“Allocating a budget to maintain and improve facilities during the winter months would be a more considerate, educated and practical approach. Let’s work together to find a solution that benefits our community,” added the resident.
Kristopher said she will be tabling maintenance allocations and budgets for repair work in the new year with the Community Services division. Tesoriere Swimming Pool summer seasonal times are 06:00 to 17:30 and this will continue through to February 2026.
