January in Durban does not have to be Januworry as the sun is still shining and the festive season still in full swing. A number of events are still underway in the city known as Africa’s playground. So if you are looking for something to do over the holidays, see the list below:
Ease into 2026 with some Bump and Grind

With 2025 now fully behind you, let Durban’s favourite comedy duo, Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert, help you kickstart the new year with their brand-new musical comedy Bump and Grind at Northlands Bowling Club from January 2 to 4 at 19:30.
The audience can expect new characters, old favourites, and a soundtrack packed with thumping hits as McIlroy and Bobbert once again deliver their trademark blend of side-splitting humour, larger-than-life personalities, and musical mayhem!
Back by popular demand are Bruce and Charmaine as unforgettable Elvis impersonators, Dot and Max settling into the chaos of retirement village life, and everyone’s favourite philosopher of the people, Dr Veejay, offering his “words of wisdom”.
Tickets for the show cost between R180 and R220 and can be purchased via Webticket. The venue is wheelchair-friendly and opens 90 minutes before the start of the show. Please liase with theatre management for wheelchair parking and seating arrangements on 082 499 8636.
Trail of Lights adds sparkle to the holidays

The historic Durban Botanic Gardens have been transformed into a glittering wonderland of entertainment and festive cheer for the magical Trail of Lights from January 1 to 3, opening from 18:00 to 22:00.
This year’s Trail of Lights has an expanded route featuring brand-new themed displays and a series of festive surprises. Visitors can also enjoy two food gardens serving festive favourites and gourmet dishes, live evening entertainment, zipline adventures through century-old trees, the Ms Claus Craft Café for children, Santa’s Grotto, and Santa’s Workshop, offering toy-building and holiday shopping opportunities.
Tickets are priced between R85 and R95 per person, with special rates available for pensioners and groups and can be purchased online via Webtickets, or at Pick n Pay and Boxer stores nationwide. Limited tickets will be available at the gate for R120 per person, subject to availability. Children aged two years and under may enter free of charge.
Musgrave Market throws a dance party
Vendors and live musicians always bring the best vibes to The Musgrave Market which is held every Saturday, from 09:00 to 15:00, at Berea Park, Stephen Dlamini Road, Musgrave. Live action in Sharks vs Lions

The Shark Tank will once again come alive with action in the Hollywoodbets Sharks 2025-2026 Vodacom United Rugby Championship campaign. On Saturday, January 3, Hollywoodbets Sharks will take on the Lions with kick-off at 15:30. Tickets vary in price and can be purchased via The Sharks website or at the ticket office.
Be bowled over by Durban’s Super Giants

The Betway SA20 is back, bigger and better than ever for its fourth season at Kingsmead Cricket Stadium with Durban’s Super Giants taking on Pretoria Capitals on Wednesday, January 7.
The premier SA20 cricket league promises an unforgettable summer of action, entertainment, and family fun, and starts at 17:30. Gates open three hours before the start of play. Bring the kids to play on the field for the first hour, remember to bring a bat and soft ball (weather dependent).

Join revelers for a relaxing Durban Picnic Party
After celebrating the start of the new year you need a break. The Beachwood Country Club in Durban North will host Durban Picnic Party on Friday, January 2, from 12:00. The R&B to House picnic party is a family event with a kids play area and is halaal-friendly.
Kids under 10 enter free and no external food and drinks are allowed. Tickets for the event range between R100 and R200 and can be purchased via Webtickets.
The Final Countdown at Barnyard

The electrifying The Final Countdown at the Barnyard is on from January 2 until February 1, on Saturday at 19:00 and Sunday at 14:00. On stage will be a sizzling five-piece band and five powerhouse vocalists deliver a high-energy performance packed with irresistible hits. Expect everything from Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, and Tina Turner to Shakira, Pink, and the Backstreet Boys. Whether you love boy bands, divas, reggae grooves, or classic rock legends, there’s something for everyone.
The setlist is a feast of unforgettable tunes: endless summer mixes with Madonna and Jason Mraz, proudly South African favourites from Mango Groove and Freshlyground, wild party anthems like YMCA and Party Rock Anthem, and heartfelt ballads including Miley Cyrus’ Flowers and Boyz II Men’s End of the Road. Tickets for the show cost between R230 and R250 and be purchased via The Barnyard website.
