Corruption-accused Metro officer granted bail

A Durban Metro Police officer has been arrested on allegations of accepting money from members of the public in exchange for employment.

THE Durban Metro Police Service confirmed that one of its officers was arrested on Wednesday (10 June) at the Durban Metro Police Headquarters for alleged corruption. The officer is accused of soliciting and accepting money from members of the public under the false pretence of securing employment for them in the Metro Police Service.

“A corruption case has been opened, and the SAPS is investigating the matter. The officer appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday, and was released on bail,” said Colonel Boysie Zungu, Durban Metro Police Service Spokesperson.

Zungu added that the department had suspended the officer with immediate effect while the criminal investigation and internal disciplinary processes continued.

“The Metro Police Service will fully cooperate with law enforcement authorities to ensure the matter is properly investigated and that the necessary action is taken,” he said.

“Any employee found guilty of corruption will face criminal charges as well as internal disciplinary action. The department encourages anyone with information about this matter, or anyone who has been approached with promises of employment in exchange for payment, to report it to the relevant authorities as soon as possible,” Zungu concluded.

Zungu also cautioned the public against offering or paying money in exchange for jobs, emphasising that the act is criminal and may result in prosecution.
