Ward 31 community bids farewell to Mckenzie

Sydenham Ratepayers Association (SRPA) brought the community together to celebrate and honour outgoing Ward 31 councillor Remona McKenzie.

Sydenham Ratepayers Association (SRPA) hosted a special community meeting and farewell celebration on Thursday, October 15, at Sydenham Community Hall, honouring outgoing Ward 31 councillor Remona McKenzie for her service and contribution to the community.

Residents and community leaders convened for an emotional farewell, reminiscing on five years of service while calling for greater community ownership and continued development.

Chaired by SRPA chairperson Lana West, the evening began with formal community business, addressing neighbourhood safety, parks management, road infrastructure, municipal services and community participation.
While the evening was dedicated to honouring McKenzie, residents also raised pressing concerns about park safety, sanitation, feeding schemes and proposed road modifications.

Reflecting on her term since 2021, McKenzie outlined a range of initiatives undertaken across Ward 31, including improvements to local roads, sporting facilities, public spaces, community safety structures and residential areas.

“I am deeply honoured to have received the award from my community, a recognition that reflects not only my personal journey, but also the collective spirit of unity and progress we share.

“I am mindful that residents often express frustration with politicians. This award affirms my commitment to my residents and stands as a guarantee that I have served with sincerity and accountability,” Mckenzie said.

Community leader Bradley Hlubi, who has worked alongside McKenzie for several years in various civic and community development structures, delivered a tribute celebrating her leadership and commitment to serving others.

Hlubi described McKenzie as a people-centred leader. “Positions are temporary, but influence, impact and legacy can outlive any position you hold,” he said. He also encouraged the residents to build upon the structures and initiatives established during McKenzie’s term.

Mckenzie acknowledged the leadership of SRPA, the religious fraternity, sporting organisations, community safety structures, civic organisations, youth organisations, and senior residents at large.
